About the Artist: Susan Wierzba
Sue has been painting in watercolors since 1990, and she especially loves painting flowers and landscapes. When she discovered the medium of dyed silk in 2006 she was enamored with its vibrant colors, combined with the texture and weave which gives brilliance, dimension and substance to her paintings. Both mediums translate beautifully the freshness, ever changing, and unique subjects found in nature. Sue is an avid gardener and her paintings are also inspired by her gardens past, present and future.
Spring 2008 Sue moved from Marietta, Georgia, with her husband, Dennis, to York, Maine, and has fallen in love with the beautiful coastline of Maine and has been thrilled to find such a thriving art community. In Summer 2008, Sue fulfilled one of her fondest dreams… to paint in Monet’s garden in Giverny, France.

She attended a workshop there with 10 other artists. They were given full access to paint in the garden every evening and all day Monday when the gardens were closed to the public. The gardens were a feast for the eyes, and soaking up the atmosphere of lushness and vibrant colors, the light and shadows and tranquility of the waterlily pond and Japanese bridge were magical. Many of her most recent silk paintings were inspired by her trip to Giverny.
Artist's Statement
I perhaps owe having become a painter to flowers.

Nothing could be closer to the truth. When I am asked, where do you find joy? I can easily say that I find it in the eyes, hearts and souls of those I meet everyday, especially in my grandchildren. But what feeds my soul? Nature, sunrises and sunsets, beaches, dew soaked gardens….ahh but it is flowers that make my soul complete and my heart soar.
Having moved 23 times in my life, I plant a flower garden as soon as possible. I garden to grow flowers that I am inspired to paint. Painting from fresh flowers gives an aliveness and detail to my paintings that just doesn’t come out in photos. But I also love to paint them spontaneously and with a riot of color, texture and joy, big, bold, in your face.
Silk is the strongest of all natural fibers. Yet the soft drape of the silk and the flow of the silk dyes create spontaneity and freshness which makes my flower and garden paintings seem to come alive! Come into my artful garden and share the exquisiteness of nature.
